Tom Hawley: Lignam Revîvere (Wood Revitalized) in the Beach Gallery

Yellow Springs artist Tom Hawley creates sculptural objects from salvaged wood, giving new life to abandoned materials. “I have a fascination with wood, and searching for interesting specimens to work with is like a treasure hunt. It’s like discovering and cutting a diamond out of a lump of coal. When I acquire wood from a fallen tree, I study it for a long time before cutting to try to reveal the most beautiful patterns in the grain. Then, as shapes and patterns emerge, they often compel me to cut and juxtapose to accentuate what I am imagining. If I can find the treasure within a piece of discarded wood and bring it back to life as an evocative dynamic form, I find that very rewarding.”

Art 360°: Contemporary Art Hatching Across Ohio

Art 360° showcases the incredible artistic creations of 48 contemporary artists from across Ohio. Each artist started with the same unique canvas: an Ostrich egg. Working in all artistic media from oil, acrylic and watercolor paints to encaustic, fiber, and ceramics, from printmaking, photography, and pen & ink, to light works and sculpture, the Art 360° artists transformed the Ostrich eggs into works of great beauty that refer to traditions in high art — the Imperial Easter eggs crafted by Peter Carl Fabergé — and to folk traditions as well — beeswax-decorated Ukrainian pysanaky eggs. SMoA plans to host a number of events featuring talks by some of the Art 360° artists as well as special programming for children based upon this wonderful exhibition.

Christopher Burk: Illuminating the Everyday (Deer Gallery)

Columbus, Ohio-based artist Christopher Burk creates meticulously painted landscapes of oft-overlooked urban environments. His works impart an engaging atmospheric quality, and encourage the viewer to look at the geography around them in a new way. This exhibition features his newest series, Stillness: Nocturnes, as well as selected paintings and drawings from past bodies of works.

Edna Boies Hopkins: Life in Print offers a unique opportunity to view a wide range of Hopkins’ works spanning several years of her career, from her exquisitely crafted woodcuts of assorted flora, to her illuminating portraits of Appalachian life. Also included are examples of her studio processes including pencil and watercolor drawings as well as a color study for the woodblock print Garden Flowers.

Faces of the Heartland: James R. Hopkins

Organized by the Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio, and Keny Galleries, this exhibition features more than 40 artworks by James Roy Hopkins, including a survey of his figural work and portraits, with a concentration upon the works he did in the Cumberland Falls area of Kentucky a century ago. The exhibition provides an opportunity to appreciate the refined skills Hopkins displayed as a figure painter as well as a chance to re-examine his depictions of Appalachian subjects and the cultural forces that created a demand for such imagery.

Vanity Deficit (The Black Gallery)

Vanity has been an integral part of the human condition throughout time. However, with the rise of technology and social media, one’s ability to not only focus inward but also to represent oneself has changed. Today, there are two realms of existence: the real and the virtual. This discrepancy between layers of reality has created a new awareness of self-representation, with its cultural impact yet to be fully understood. Featuring four artists from Generation Z, this exhibition directly challenges and considers modern forms of vanity through installation, performance, drawings, and prints. Guest curated by Ryan A. Ramirez.

Juneteenth Celebration of Gammon House (Community Room)

The Gammon House was a stop on the Underground Railroad. The house is newly renovated as an education center.

Ohio Plein Air Society artists painted the house during the Juneteenth festival in June 2017.

Juneteenth is the celebration of the end of slavery in the United States.

71st Annual Juried Members’ Exhibition

The Annual Juried Members’ Exhibition at the Springfield Museum of Art is always a treat for the museum community. The show provides a unique opportunity for our member artists to connect through art media, subject, and style or simply through shared creative spirit. Everyone who submits work will have at least one piece juried into the show. The work includes painting, sculpture, fiber, clay, photography and mixed media. Our member artists include nationally and internationally recognized artists along with local favorites. Every artist’s voice rings out through this eclectic assemblage of artistic skill. The exhibition is a true celebration of the creative talent in our region.
