Plein Air is a term derived from the French phrase “en plein air,” which literally means “in the open air.” These artists, painting in the open air, are particularly interested in the influence of the changing light outdoors. This year’s exhibition is comprised of paintings from the Plein Air Society executed at specific sites, during specific seasons and times of day, illustrating new ways to see our State.
An Ohio treasure, Jack Earl’s ceramic sculpture transforms the everyday into the extraordinary. With his keen sense of humor and exceptional craftsmanship, Jack depicts the people and places in his life as engaging, magical tableaus and sculptures. Mothers, icons, and men with dogs courting, we see humanity and relationships laid out before us. Regional references, family values, and wit combine to make this clay work universally appealing.
This exhibition presents large, explosive canvases, full of color and discovery. Professor Crockett’s paintings record deliberate acts; they are tracings of what has been made, unmade, and remade, and present a topography that hovers between the threshold of meaning and the destruction of meaning. This is the artist’s act of discovery through paint.

This exhibition presents an anthology of skate art from the 1960s to the present, including approximately 275 skateboards, skate decks, and original artwork. These eye-catching images are one of the purest forms of self-expression: highly personal and created without boundaries – like skateboarding itself.
Most often used as preliminary sketches for paintings or sculptures, drawings are seldom seen as completed works in and of themselves. This exhibition showcases the finished drawings of three artists, each working in a different drawing medium, exemplifying that drawing is a dynamic, diverse art form.
“Preserved Portraits” presents two distinct bodies of Barbara Vogel’s recent work in portraiture. A series of painted wood cuts from photographs captures the individuality, character, and mood in each portrait using bold colors and the added dimension of the wood cut. Encaustic photographs that are treated with wax, creating a gauze-like film over the image, dulls the details and makes the subjects less recognizable. Vogel’s use of an unfocused picture represents cloudy periods of depression in her own life.
