Spread the Joy!

Due to the current state of affairs, many feel isolated in hospitals and care facilities with limited or no visitors, including children. Dayton Children’s hospital is encouraging community members to send patients e-cards through their website, as a way to spread joy during this difficult time. Visit their website to choose from 3 different rainbow designs and include a special message for a patient!

Ms. Wise’s Artatory

We read about Ms. Wise’s Artatory in the Springfield News-Sun and were so excited to hear about the work she’s doing!

This Possum elementary school teacher is sharing creative ideas and projects with her students while school is unexpectedly out of session. Art can be very cathartic during difficult times, and is needed now more than ever.

Explore her Facebook page for some creative activities you can work on at home!

Step-by Step for Making a Linoleum Relief Print

In relief printmaking, an image is printed and raised from the surface. Artists remove pieces of the surface using gouges, leaving what’s left to be printed on paper – similar to a stamp. You may also hear this referred to as “block printing” and you can use a variety of materials as your “block” such as linoleum, wood, rubber, or even styrofoam. Once the image is carved, ink is applied using a roller (or brayer) and then paper is placed over the top of the image and run through a printing press, or hand-pressed. The result is a mirror image of the design on your block.

Flowers for Friends

We’re so happy to see other museums supporting each other during these tough times, and we want to jump on the #MuseumBouquet train! Sending these lovely Edna Boies Hopkins flowers to our neighboring institutions, The Dayton Art Institute and Columbus Museum of Art. We will all get through this together! Check out the #MuseumBouquet hashtag to see prints and paintings of flowers art museums have been sharing to brighten everyone’s day.

Cards for Everyone!

With several artists on staff, we realize that art is an effective coping mechanism during rocky times. We wanted to make handmade cards to send out to local area nursing homes along with exhibit posters and postcards. Kelley, Casey, and Elizabeth created relief prints by carving into a piece of linoleum, and then hand-pressing it onto cardstock. Watch out for a step-by-step guide to create your own relief print at home!

Looking for some colorful inspiration at home? Check out the Harvard-Smithsonian Micro-observatory telescope to take your own pictures of the cosmos!

During the school year, our Curator of Education, Annette Eshelman, works with Clark Shawnee middle school students to capture images of space through a STEAM education program called “Youth Capture the Colorful Cosmos.” Students use the Smithsonian program to develop their science, technology, engineering, art, and math skills by using remote access to the Harvard-Smithsonian Micro-observatory telescopes.

Astronomers are making new discoveries every day, and you can too! Just click the link below to navigate to their webpage, then open the “tools and training tab” to learn how to access the robotic telescopes and process your images. This is a great project to do with kids while our community practices social distancing. Make sure to share your pictures in the comments or tag us using #momentsforjoy and #smoa!
