Artists remove pieces of the surface using gouges, leaving what\u2019s left to be printed on paper \u2013 similar to a stamp. You may also hear this referred to as \u201cblock printing\u201d and you can use a variety of materials as your \u201cblock\u201d such as linoleum, wood, rubber, or even styrofoam. Once the image is carved, ink is applied using a roller (or brayer) and then paper is placed over the top of the image and run through a printing press, or hand-pressed.
