Parallel
A communications port on your computer usually used for printer and various other peripheral devices. Parallel plugs have 25 pins and have limited data transfer speeds. Usually requires that device be present at boot-up.
serial
A communications port on your computer, in the past usually used for external modem, it is now used mainly for input devices such as a mouse. Usually requires that device be present at boot-up.
USB
Acronym for Universal Serial Bus. This is the best method so far for transferring data from camera to computer. USB is several times faster than parallel or serial and is Hot Swappable meaning that a USB device is recognized by your computer as soon as you plug it in.
Compact Flash
A memory card used in digital cameras for temporary storage of images.
Memory Stick
A memory card used in digital cameras for temporary storage of images.
Smart Media
A memory card used in digital cameras for temporary storage of images.
Smart Media Reader
Similar to a floppy disk except that it has no spinning disk. Data is converted to magnetic impulses allowing the floppy drive magnetic head to read the data as if it were on a magnetic disk.
